Onsite Accessibility

Due to the nature of our location, there are some steep gradients on our site. From our main reception area and car park, it is about a 600m walk to our seal hospital, and then a further 300m downhill to our seal pools.

Please read the following information to help plan your visit with us.

Please call us on 01326 221 361 so we can help you make the most of your day, or email seals@sealifetrust.com.

Visitors using mobility scooters or electric wheelchairs

The hills leading down to our pools may exceed 16° which may not be suitable for some mobility scooters and electric wheel chairs. Please check your instruction manuals before visiting.

For visitors unable to use their mobility scooters or electric wheelchairs on steep slopes, we do have limited accessible parking available near our seal pools. Please see further information on accessible parking below.

Vehicle Assistance

For visitors that require vehicle assistance due to the site’s steep gradients, we have 4 parking spaces available on-site near our seal pools where guests are able to use their own vehicle to drive and park in these spaces to visit our seal pools. These spaces are available on a first come first served basis and may fill up quickly.

Please speak to a member of our team on arrival if you require this assistance and to confirm availability.

Accessible Car Parking

Our main accessible parking area is immediately in front of our main reception.

Accessible Toilets

Our accessible toilets and baby changing facilities are located in our front reception, and on the left hand side of our Seal Hospital. Our baby changing facilities include changing units with a weight limit of 50lbs. Unfortunately there are no accessible toilet facilities once down the hill by our seals pools due to the estuary location.

Free Carer Policy

One carer goes free for every paying disabled guest. Please note the exception of under 3 year old's who already are entitled to free entry to The Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Free entry for a carer will be valid against both walk up and online purchased tickets. Please ensure that you bring documentation with you on the day such as your blue badge, DLA Letter or note from a doctor or specialist.

We can make allowances for disabled visitors who need more than 1 carer in exceptional circumstances. Please contact the Sanctuary directly to confirm your visit and additional carers before your visit.

At the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, we are committed to making our Sanctuary inclusive and accessible to all.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature, learn about marine conservation, and have unforgettable experiences with our animals. We continuously strive to make our sanctuary a friendly and welcoming place for every visitor.

Guide Dogs Training

This year 10 members of our team have completed specialist training from sight loss charity Guide Dogs, enabling them to better support visitors with a vision impairment.

Carole Butler, sighted guide training officer for Guide Dogs, who led the training, said: "People with sight loss often come up against access challenges when they’re out and about.

"These can stop them from going to the places they want, when they want, or mean their experience of visiting somewhere isn’t as positive as it could be. It’s great that the Seal Sanctuary recognises this and has worked with us to train up staff members to be sighted guides. Being able to offer this type of support to visitors with sight loss will make a huge difference and have a direct impact on their experience.

During the training, staff paired up to practise guiding one another under blindfolds, describing surroundings and obstacles out loud.

They also learned about common eye conditions and tried ‘simulation spectacles’ to better understand how visitors might see the world.

Claire Harriman, head of operations, safety and security at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, said: "Our staff found the training very interesting and hugely informative, giving us an insight into a small part of the world of a vision-impaired guest or colleague. We are all committed to making visits more inclusive and safer following our session.

This year we have introduced Sanctuary Sensory Bags.

Our sensory bags are designed to support guests, helping to create a more comfortable and inclusive experience across the sanctuary.

Thoughtfully curated, each bag contains a selection of items to assist with sensory regulation, communication, and moments of calm. Inside, guests will find ear defenders to help reduce surrounding noise, as well as feelings cards to support non-verbal communication with our team. There are also tactile items such as a squeezy ball, worry stone, and a variety of fidget toys, offering simple ways to manage stress and stay grounded.

For those who prefer a quieter, more mindful pace, a magnifying glass encourages gentle exploration of the natural environment, from woodland areas to grassy meadows. Together, these resources are intended to empower guests to engage with the sanctuary in a way that feels right for them, ensuring everyone can enjoy a positive and supported visit.
