Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Kat

Thursday, 23 April 2026

Behind every rescue, rehabilitation, and successful release back into the wild, there’s a dedicated team of people making it all possible, and that includes our incredible volunteers.

Our Volunteer Spotlight series is a chance to shine a light on the people who give their time, energy, and passion to support the Sanctuary and the animals in our care. From early mornings to long days in all weathers, their commitment helps us continue our vital work rescuing and rehabilitating seals.

In this feature, we’re introducing Kat, our longest-standing volunteer, whose journey with us began in 2018 and has been a valued part of the team ever since!

Kat is one of our incredible regular volunteers here at the Sanctuary, working closely with our animal care team. She first joined us back in 2018 and is now one of our longest-standing volunteers, giving up countless Sundays to support the care of both our rehabilitation and resident animals, whatever the weather throws her way (rain, shine… and even snow!).

Balancing a full-time job and a busy family life, Kat still makes the journey to Cornwall to be with us! Over the years, she’s become a truly valued part of the Seal Sanctuary family and has even been here longer than many members of staff. We always look forward to the first Sunday of the month, knowing we’ll get to catch up with Kat. She brings such positive energy and enthusiasm, always ready to dive into whatever the day has in store.

We simply couldn’t do what we do without the dedication of people like Kat.

Kat’s Story

“Well, my love of seals came from my mum and dad bringing me to the seal sanctuary when I was little. I was apparently mesmerised by them and fell in love!

I always wanted to be a marine biologist when I was growing up, but life didn't take me that way after losing mum. I never lost my love of animals and seals! It was actually my partner Justin that saw the seal sanctuary's Facebook post back in 2018 and he sent it to me telling me it was time to chase my dreams! So, I applied and got a space, and you have been stuck with me ever since.

As everyone knows it is my real happy place, especially when life is tough. I can come down and do a day with you all and feel recharged! But that is also a lot to do with the team, not just the animals. You make me feel so valued and part of the team!”

What tasks/responsibilities do you enjoy most?

Feeding the residents, they all have different characters.

Typical day?

About a 14hr day for me, but I love it! The drive is full of excitement about what the day will hold and if any new pups have arrived. I also quite like seeing the humans?! (We love seeing you, too!) There is plenty of cleaning, from pup pens to buckets, sweeping, hosing, scrubbing and of course feeding the seals - definitely one of the best jobs!

One thing about the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, people should know?

It's amazing, definitely my happy place. It's peaceful. They do incredible work and have for over 50 years. I wish I had the privilege of meeting Ken Jones for all his stories. That's more than one, but I love the sanctuary.

Go-to seal survival tip?

Be prepared for all weathers and always remember to pack an extra pair of socks! Even if it's dry outside, our residents like to splash... a lot!

Most rewarding moment?

Rescuing a seal pup with the animal care team. Release days are pretty special, too. Getting to be a part of the rehab process from start to end.

What seal would you be?

I’d like to be more Banana, in her own world, not really caring what others think, just swimming on by.

We’re so grateful to have Kat as part of our team. Her passion, commitment, and love for the animals shine through in everything she does, thank you Kat!
