Life at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary
Wednesday, 22 April 2020
We have now been closed due to the necessary lockdown in the UK for 5 weeks, we thought we'd do a little update on how we are getting on!
Life at the Sanctuary is very different to what it was just 5 weeks ago, it really is quite bizarre seeing our 42 acre site so quiet! We have always said what makes the Sanctuary so special is the people, so it has been quite an adjustment for both the team here and the animals.
Our animals are very people orientated, Aayla one of our grey seals spends a lot of her day down in the underwater viewing area people watching and also saying hello! The team are doing lots of extra enrichment and fun for the animals to keep them all happy, healthy and entertained without all their human friends being around at the minute!
The animal care team have been split into two teams, to ensure there is always a team available to look after the animals; Team Aayla and Team Banana. Each team are working 7 days on site then 7 days working from home, so they are working very hard and despite being extremely tired they are in good spirits and grateful to be able to be working outdoors during this time.
There is a real sense of team spirit during this time, they are all having regular video chats to keep each other updated and leaving each other surprise gifts to boost morale which has been lovely. For their Easter surprise, team Aayla organised a little easter surprise with these amazing Easter eggs that were kindly gifted to us by Trenance Chocolate - they have been very much appreciated!
Despite missing our guests, the animals at the Sanctuary are doing extremely well. We try to regularly update you all so you can enjoy the Sanctuary from your homes, and we have really enjoyed chatting to you all during this time.
We also want to thank you all so much for your support during this time, it has been overwhelming. The kindness you have shown to our Sanctuary has been unbelievable, from donations to local creatives donating their profits to the animals, we thank every single person who has supported us, even by sharing our appeal it helps spread awareness and we are so grateful. We cannot wait to see everyone once we are able to open our doors again, it really just isn't the same without you all here.
Our Seal Appeal is doing incredibly well and we are so close to our target, if you are able to donate it would mean the world to us, or if you can share our appeal that would be so appreciated. Click here to go to our Just Giving page.
We are sending all of our well wishes to you from everyone at the Sanctuary, we will continue to share the Sanctuary antics with you and hopefully keep you all entertained from afar!
