Turning the Tide: How We Can Reduce Plastic Pollution and Protect Our Planet?

Wednesday, 02 October 2024

Our Conservation officer Grace gives some easy wins to help tackle the issue of plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution on our beaches is a growing environmental crisis, but the good news is that we can all play a role in turning the tide.

From the items we use daily to the choices we make while shopping, small changes can add up to a big impact. Whether it's bringing reusable bags, avoiding single-use plastics, or participating in local beach cleans, our everyday actions can help protect marine life and keep our coastlines clean.

Because of the benefits of plastic, its global production has doubled every decade. The amount of plastic produced, since 1950, has measured to about 9.2 billion tonnes – the weight of roughly 88 million blue whales! However, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental concerns.

Much of this plastic ends up as rubbish, single use plastic, such as coffee cups and disposable cutlery, are particularly harmful and contribute to 40% of global waste - damaging natural habitats, endangering wildlife, and polluting communities around the world.

Unlike other materials, plastic does not biodegrade. It can take up to 1,000 years to break down, so when it is discarded, it builds up in the environment.

These plastics will degrade into smaller and smaller pieces and are known as microplastics. Microplastics pose a huge threat to the health of our ocean and the creatures who call it home.

Simple Change

Moving forward, a great way of us countering the amount of plastic pollution is to reduce the amount of single use plastic we use. By opting towards reusable alternatives in our daily lives, will help reduce the impact of plastic waste.

How You Can Help Our Planet:

  • Ditch the cling film – use reusable silicone lids for food storage.
  • Use a reusable coffee cup! Plus, you can get discount on your drinks at selected coffee shops.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Plastic free party decorations.
  • Purchase items second-hand.
  • Spread Awareness: Share information about plastic pollution with your friends, family, and community. Encourage others to adopt eco-friendly habits and join the movement.
  • RECYCLE!

It can be quite daunting to adapt our lives to reduce plastic waste.

A good way to start is to try one small change at a time and committing to it. For example, could you switch to a glass ketchup bottle instead of a squeaky plastic one?

Could you start recycling soft plastic to your nearest supermarket instead of disposing of it in the bin? One small change will make a huge impact to our planet.
