Are You Wildlife Wise This Halloween?

Wednesday, 30 October 2024

As autumn brings seasonal activities, like pumpkin carving and bonfire night, it’s important to consider our vulnerable wildlife and how small actions can help protect them.

As we slowly approach the colder winter months, for many of our native species such as hedgehogs, this means getting ready for hibernation – Hedgehogs typically hibernate from late October/November to March/April, but the exact dates depend on the weather.

In milder winters, hedgehogs may remain active into December.

Hedgehogs enter a state of torpor, where they appear to be asleep but are slowing down their bodily functions to save energy. During hibernation, their body temperature drops, their heart rate slows, and their breathing almost stops. They don't eat or drink, relying on the fat stores they built up over the summer. In milder Winters, they may wake up to have a bite to eat or even to move nests.

In autumn, you can help hedgehogs prepare for hibernation by putting out food for them. The best time to put out food is just after dusk, and you can stop putting out food when you notice that the hedgehogs are eating less and less.

What YOU can do to help hedgehogs this Halloween!

  • Don’t wake a sleeping hog: If you accidentally disturb a hibernating hedgehog, cover the nest with dry leaves and leave out some food and water. This will give the hedgehog something to eat before it finds a new hibernation spot.
  • Keep pumpkins out of reach: Though hedgehogs love the taste, eating pumpkin can upset their digestive system and cause dehydration, which is life-threatening for hedgehogs in the wild.
  • Create a leaf pile: Not only is diving into a pile of leaves super fun! They can also create a nice warm hideaway for hibernating mammals and invertebrates, which will also provide vital food for birds and amphibians.
  • Remember hedgehogs this Bonfire Night: Heaps of materials, including bonfires, can attract animals such as hedgehogs that are looking for a place to nest. Make sure you check the bonfire thoroughly before lighting. Ideally, it should be built on the day of lighting.
